Design research / PhD in design – panel discussion

2018.04.14, Piotr Michura

Wtorek, 17 kwietnia 2018, sala 108, 13:15

It is a great privilege and a rare opportunity to host three distinguished professors from three different countries - Brazil, USA, and Switzerland - in one panel. They are going to share their experiences and thoughts on issues of design research, design theory, and PhD level education in design discipline.

Michael Renner
Professor, Chair of the Visual Communication Institute at the Basel School of Design (HGK FHNW). His research is centered around information design, design process, design research, and “practice-led iconic research”.

Stan Ruecker
Anthony J. Petullo Professor of Design, School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. His current research areas include text visualization, physical tools for the analysis of text data, and design for interpretive experience.

Celso Scaletsky
Professor, Post Graduate Program in Design at the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos – UNISINOS, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. His research is oriented to project theory with a specialization in strategic design.

Below, there are three papers which have been proposed as a context for the upcoming discussion:

Hodges, P., S. Ruecker, C. Scaletsky, J. Rivera, R. Faller, A. Geppert. (2017). Four Criteria for Design Theories. In: She Ji The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation, Volume 3, Number 1.
